Open to all Early Childhood Programs!

Iowa demographics and populations are growing ever more diverse and children are leading the way. Early Childhood Education leadership teams are invited to attend a one-day workshop on October 18, 2023 to learn the five essential cultural competencies that allow individuals and organizations to function optimally in a changing world. The workshop will address cultural competence skill-building and a framework for understanding and promoting equity along the four levels of equity: personal, interpersonal, organizational, and systemic. Leadership teams will spend time discussing aspects of the four levels of equity, reflect on their own practices and work towards the goal of fostering an ongoing commitment to change at an individual and organizational level through concrete activity, reflection, and self-directed learning.

This training will consist of structured activities and discussions that address the five cultural competencies adopted by Early Childhood Iowa:

Individual:

  1. Awareness and acceptance of differences
  2. Awareness of own cultural values
  3. Understanding dynamics of differences
  4. Development of cultural knowledge
  5. Ability to adapt practice to the cultural context of children and families

Organizational:

  1. Valuing diversity
  2. Cultural self-assessment
  3. Managing the dynamics of differences
  4. Institutionalization of cultural knowledge
  5. Adaptation to diversity in policies, values, structure, and service

The training will connect these competencies to other equity resources and principles including the ECI Equity Guiding Principles and the Head Start Multicultural Principles.

Presenter: The prior Iowa Head Start State Collaboration Office Coordinator for 17 years, Tom Rendon has interacted and advocated for Head Start as a passionate leader in our community. In retirement he continues the charge to bring attention and a voice to issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.
